March 7, 2011 - Production Presentation Paper Feedback

  • lots of work
  • done research to look at different options - disadvantages and advantages of voice - npt everyone accounts for culture - audio can be a distraction if it doesn't keep up with text
  • optimal segment length - what is the purpose for what audience in that amount of time
  • parallel design - compare animated against static one -
  • we will be each other's test groups - mock up of - to collect feedback

January 24 presentation feedback
love digital storytelling - little guystick_man_party_300_clr.gif
hand distracting (Jeannette)
face to voice or not
Michele - whole idea of instructional video is a ripe area for inquiry - will come up with useful results for the whole group

No other questions

Segment length - difference between novice and expert users - novice may benefit frrom being able to review - Mrs. Blossom's ... Salima - best tutorial video

Evaluation
Functionality effectiveness learnability

methodology - observation, questions, interviews

General Class Discussion Notes
parallel design process - Nielsen - look up more
gather data through user - obsv, questionniare
ease of learnability navigation
feedback closed and open ended questions
research re: text or video - lots of reseaarch - educational journal on research - compares text video
for all projects questions:

reading for cog understanding different than reading to understand activity you're going to do in 5 minutes

if time is short, need to be able to access information quickly
long term sport - have more time to get through text
what conditions for what learners, what's the purpose, WHO is using WHY and how can we get them doing that as quickly as possible - reallly think about who your learners are and what their purpose is

testing deeply held intuitions of what would work best
how to fold a fitted sheet ...
sometimes we overcomplicate things ... e.g. teaching piano to 5 year olds

research on learning - makes a big difference on the decisions we make with our media - we can approximate some of the best 1:1 teaching with our media -

musical lesson examples - e.g. playing guitar - just playing it? for proficient players may be okay, but for more novice players they would need pictures of fingering (or whatever the heck it was)

Retention - may be able to replicate right away, but ... 72 hour recall - what is that like?

have to know who our learners are - target our instruction - need to know their experience level, their literacy level, how novice/expert, cultural things

By next week post - powerpoints or textual description tonight - put on blogs by next monday = refine ideas - tonight was to help with scope

we've talked about learner characteristics - expert vs. novice- consider
issue of fidelity - how realistic does it have to be
icon design - use them well to communicate intent

no matter what strand of media production we're looking at - can't oversimplify or get too complex - something we can actually do in the next couple of weeks =- every one of our projects is tapping into how complex media development is

budget, timeframe, best option for purpose we have for this application - what's the best choice - video, video text, animation ... what?

for next week provide a summary - where we're going, how we're going to get there, questions we have, evaluation proposals - post powerpoints
